ENGLISH: Raising bilingual children is a long
process that can be hard sometimes. Many families choose to raise bilingual
children and sometimes they find themselves lost or desperate towards the
process. Here we bring you some tips that will make this arduous activity
easier and will help you to obtain better results:
- Start early: the ideal age to start learning a second language to become bilingual is between birth and the 6-7 years of age. To learn more, look at the interview with Elena García Achaques, a teacher specialized in Language and Hearing disorders.
- Perseverance: recall your long-term goal and fix it firmly in your mind.
- Priorize it: the process of becoming bilinguals has to be one of the family’s highest priorities, and all the members need to collaborate to reach the goal.
- Get informed: the more information about bilingualism you have, the more you can help your children. You can obtain information from books, talking to other bilingual families and to the teachers of your kids, and of course, reading our blog Bilingual Brains and asking us any question you have.
- Adopt a strategy: you have to adopt a strategy at home and follow always it. You can opt for the one person-one language approach (for example, the father talks always in Spanish and the mother in English) or to talk only in the minority language at home and let the children learn the majority language from the community (in the case of Mexican parents living in USA, they can speak Spanish and let the children learn English outside home).
- Make it fun: you can be very serious about the process but make the experience fun for your children at the same time, through films, games, books, and especially having positive attitude towards the process.
- Talk to your children: the more you talk to them in the second language, the quicker and better they will learn it.
- Read: you can either read to them books in the second language or let them read by themselves (giving them books, visiting the library, buying them magazines, etc.)
- Listen to music in the second language.
- Have a native friend: though the interaction with a native speaker, your children will learn the language having fun and acquiring specific vocabulary they can only learn through dialogues with peers. If you don’t have the option to meet native speakers, your children can always have a pen-friend.
